I closed my first client with a few hundred followers
And we're still friends years later. This is how you can build the same relationships

I closed my first client off this account with a few hundred followers.
I was a month into my “personal brand” journey.
I didn’t have any expectations.
I wasn't running any outbound, I wasn't pitching anyone, I wasn't even sure what this brand was supposed to become.
At that point I was only talking about ecom like email marketing, AOV, conversion rate optimization.
A brand owner in a fighting niche started commenting on my stuff. He was building his own business at the time, I was building mine, and we just started joking around in replies.
We became actual friends.
A few weeks later he paid me around $3,000 USD to help him with his brand.
That was my first client.
And the reason it closed wasn't because of a funnel or a clever hook or a quote tweet.
It closed because there was nothing transactional behind it.
I wasn't trying to extract anything from him.
I was just being a human, and he happened to become a customer because of that.
To this day, we still follow each other on Instagram. Personal ones.
I know when his kids are born, when something big happens in his life, when he's closing a deal. And that's the pattern I've seen with almost every person I connected with back when I was starting out.
We all know each other on a real level.
We've been invited to each other's weddings and big life events. And almost every single one of them has either paid me or been paid by me at some point over the years, sometimes in the tens of thousands.
Now I do want to clarify something real quick…
You do have to treat your personal brand like a department of your business. There has to be a systemization of the
- Posting
- Content strategy
- Weekly optimization
All of that is non-negotiable if you want this to compound.
But the system side is not where the deals come from.
The deals come from the human layer underneath it. The replies you send that aren't trying to sell anything, the people you pay attention to and the relationships you build with other founders who are a few steps ahead or a few steps behind you.
I can't systemize how many deals I'll close from my personal brand in any given month. Nobody can. What I can systemize is this: as long as I keep connecting with people on a personal level, I will always close deals from this account. Every year. For as long as I'm posting.
One thing to do this week:
Pick three founders in your space whose content you like
Reply to their posts this week with something that has zero agenda. An actual thought, a joke, a counter-take, a question you genuinely want the answer to.
Do that for four weeks straight and tell me what happens.
