My 165k Follower Count Means Nothing?

Stop trying to grow your audience

I have around 165k followers on X.

And a huge percentage of them will probably never buy anything from me.

That sounds stupid considering I literally built a business around founder content.

But for a while, I was posting motivation, productivity, broad business advice, whatever book I happened to be reading.

And it worked.

Followers climbed.

Posts performed.

The account looked healthy.

So I kept doing it.

The problem was that I was training people to follow me for things that had almost nothing to do with what I was actually good at.

And at one point, every new follower was worth around $3 to $5 to the business.

But then I started posting willy-nilly as much as I could without much intention and the number collapsed.

It taught me that your follower number is actually pretty useless.

Your audience can grow while your authority starts gets weaker.

I see this all the time on the TL.

Founders hae built huge companies, have insane proof, understand their market better than nearly anyone...

Then they go on X and post:

“Keep going. Your time is coming.”

> One from the co-founder.

> One from an employee.

The expertise they have is insane.

The market just has no reason to associate that expertise with their name yet.

This is the online authority game.

Get the right people to repeatedly connect your name with a specific problem, result, or belief.

AKA. A micro-authority.

You don’t need everyone to know who you are.

You need the right people to know exactly what you’re good at.

And the easiest place to start is your sales calls.

The objections you hear every week?

Content.

The outcome they want?

Content.

The mistakes you made solving that problem?

Content.

The decisions that cost you money?

Content.

Only buyers have buyer objections.

So write around those.

Then repeat yourself. WAY more than feels comfortable.

Pick a few ideas you genuinely believe and want your market to associate with your name.

- stories

- proof

- client results

- opinions

- breakdowns

Same core belief but with different angles.

Eventually your name starts carrying context before someone even reads the post.

Your account will be a crazy business asset.

And if I were auditing yours today, I’d ask one question:

If someone read five posts in a row, would they know exactly what I’m good at?

If the answer is no, that’s where I’d start.
